Boehringer-Zealand drug leads to 16.6% weight loss in late-stage trial

Reuters 2:00 AM ET Apr-28-2026
FRANKFURT, April 28 (Reuters) - Boehringer Ingelheim said on Tuesday its experimental obesity drug led to averageweight loss of up to 16.6% in a late-stage trial, as the unlisted German drugmaker seeks to catch up with obesity drug pioneers Eli Lilly (LLY.NaE) and Novo Nordisk.

The Phase III trial showed patients treated with survodutidelost 16.6% of their body weight after 76 weeks, compared with 3.2% in a placebo group, Boehringer said in a statement.

Participants were obese or overweight adults without type 2diabetes.

Boehringer acquired the rights in 2011 to solely develop and commercialise survodutide from Denmark's Zealand Pharma, which is entitled to royalty payments on global revenue.

Full results from the Phase III study, called SYNCHRONIZE-1,will be presented at the American Diabetes Association's 2026 Scientific Sessions, scheduled from June 5 to June 8, 2026.

Survodutide mimics the appetite-suppressing gut hormone GLP-1, targeted by injectable drugs such as Novo's Wegovy, but also imitates the gut hormone glucagon, a combination some developers hope will boost weight loss. Altimmune (ALT.NaE) is developing a drug based on the effects of the same two hormones. In early 2024, survodutide delivered promising mid-stage results in the treatment of fatty liver, also known as metabolic-dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, or MASH. Friend of mine was in the Survo Study Phase II I guess. She was Diabetes Typ 2 and lost 60 pounds and bloodsugar went back to normal. Her doctor brought she in the study. Now a year after that she has maintained the weight loss. They just cut her off everything after the study was finished. Have to ask her again how it goes.

Thats pretty amazing! This isnt necessarily the case for semaglutide and tirzepatide. I think its the glucagon agonism thats destroys visceral fat. Id think that reta could also generate that kind of maintenance. Once you restore liver function by reducing NAFLD significantly, things change.

Im on survodutide now because of that (with tirzepatide) and have to say that the increase in weight loss has been very modest but my waist circumference has been trending down consistently albeit slowly. Im sticking with it for a while.

Its a shame the report doesnt mention the dosage used. Id certainly like to know.

Perhaps those details will be released in June at American Diabetes Association's 2026 Scientific Sessions, June 5th
