So I watched EL's CEO on CNBC this morning talking with Cramer (LLY's stock was down about 6% today because they missed earnings, buying opportunity?) and when he started talking about reta I did a double take, "what did he just say?". Apparently, I have been saying retatrutide wrong all along.

I have always pronounced it reh-ta-tru-tide or reta-tru-tide
  • reta: rhymes with betta
  • tru: as in true
  • tide: like the ocean tide
The correct pronunciation : reh-tat-TROO-tide
  • reh: as in "red" (without the "d")
  • tat: as in tattoo
  • TROO: rhymes with "true"
  • tide: as in "tide" (the ocean tide)
For the reddit folks TIL.

That's not how Google pronounced it. I couldn't get Google to show me (as opposed to giving me an audio) of how to pronounce it in English. I did get it to show me how to pronounce it in Chinese and it also gave me the Chinese spelling: 瑞他曲肽 Ruì tā qū tài. Although I could get Google to give me the audio in English, it wouldn't show you visually how to pronounce it.

Yay, I got this one right. Unlike wegovy, which I pronounced it like
WEG-oh-vee for about 9 months. Eventually I heard it on a commercial where they said we-GO-vee.

It took me a while to start pronouncing correctly. I still call reta "ree-ta" though. I guess when you makeup a word, you also get to determine how it's pronounced.

I was pronouncing Ra-tet-true-tide for the first 2 weeks after I’d heard about it. Then watched some YouTube videos of Chase Irons and realized I was wrong. To be honest. It felt wrong in the beginning but I couldn’t figure it out myself. I would stumble over the word and have to like think it out in my head. 🤣

I’ve been seeing annoying advertisements on FB calling Semaglutide “sah-mag-la-tide.”

It's weg-oh-vee to me, too... IDC. 🤷‍♀️

I hear doctors pronouncing Reta the "wrong" way. The correct pronunciation is the one that comes into common usage, according to the dictionary. If the docs are pronouncing it wrong, so will their patients. Eventually that will become the correct pronunciation.

It seems there is confusion within Eli Lilly as to how Retatrutide should be pronounced. Either that or we're being gaslighted! Lol.

Eli Lilly's Chief Scientist was on CNBC this morning, and he pronounced it the way other sane humans do—reta-troo-tide. The interview can be seen here, and the comment of interest is at 1:33: https://www.cnbc.com/2025/02/20/eli-lilly-dan-skovronsky-discusses-weight-loss-drugs.html
thank god

and thank you for bringing this to our attention to save us from the madness

Relatedly, I’ve listened to a bunch of podcasts with folks from Novo, including the gal who basically created Sema, and they pronounce it sem-AG-luh-tyde (and that’s how I say it), but I hear most people say it seh-muh-GLOO-tyde.
