Alibaba locked my account

For no good reason. Now they want my cell number to send a verification code to unlock it. Why not just send the verification code to my email which they already have. They're mining my info.

This seems scummy to me.

these days this is actually happening commonly on many platforms, its more like verification to prevent or weed-out fake accounts (effectiveness - its a different question)
many even ask you for your ID etc.

yep, normally the platform allows you to click on the number they have for you with a number of digits hidden. These guys are asking for my whole phone number which i don't think i ever provided. It definitely seems off.

AliBaba company isn't just some guys ... they will probably just verify your account with code they send to your phone and that's it, nothing to be worried about

Companies love to demand as much information as possible - it’s good business.

As milos mentioned, there isn’t much danger in giving it to them. Worst case scenario the ads you are targeted with increase in accuracy.
