Americans Are Obsessed With Protein and It’s Driving Nutrition Experts Nuts

I think it’s difficult eating as much protein as you are supposed to. I’m 6’ 1”. And would like to weigh 200lbs lean. 200 grams of protein per day is VERY intentional. I would prefer to get it all from filet, but who the hell can afford that?

"It's not as overwhelming to think about the amount per meal versus total per day," Susie says, "but also, that's just better for you."

In general, most people should try to get between 20 and 30 grams of protein at every meal, Susie says. If your protein goal is a little higher, you may want to aim for 20 to 40 grams per meal, plus a few 10-gram snacks along the way...

The FDA RDA for protein is 0.36g/lb. I know, that's crazy low, I was shocked too when I first read it.

The body building mantra is 1g/lb, perhaps that is, just a 'little' bit excessive for normal people.

They also gave us the food pyramid. lol 😝

There is a lot to factor into how much protein you need. Activity level, training goals, etc. if you want to grow any muscle you definitely need more than 0.36g/lb. Maybe that’s a base amount of protein a person needs to survive? I’m more inclined to trust people like Andrew Huberman or Gabrielle Lyon than the FDA. It’s done a lot of good for me so far. I also understand now why when I was in the Army they fed us copious amounts of chicken every day. Back then I just thought they were being cheap.

I do believe that the American diet is garbage in general because of the level of processed foods we consume. If we consumed milk that wasn’t ultra processed and wasn’t stripped of whey so they could sell it to us two or three different times we would probably be healthier from just that alone.

Then there all of the nutrients and Amino Acids that you need to make sure you are consuming to even process the protein we eat. Why can’t anything be simple? Because then people couldn’t profit. Living and eating healthy is pretty expensive.

I really hope I don’t keep doing all of this to be healthier and then get hit by a car or something.

Fact of the matter is, the vast majority of americans need more protein (along with more resistance training). That doesn't mean you can just eat like crap if you get your protein macros in, but getting enough protein should be one of the goals for anyone taking their nutrition seriously.

The article seems to overstate how much the fitness and nutrition industry is upset about this, too. One random personal trainer from the Chicago suburbs talking about chicken breasts and eggs - yeah sure eat those too, but why is this person anyone we should care about? I know a million certified personal trainers that aren't even remotely up to date on what the science actually says about all of this. And one professor that is more concerned about fiber than protein - which is also another major area of need for Americans, but that doesn't mean that we don't also need protein.

The study referenced about leucine and plaque build up is interesting and indicative of a need for further research but a single study is not enough to take anything as being true at face value, and we know that people on protein sparing modified fasts can actually see CAC scores decrease over the course of the diet despite getting an overwhelming portion of their calories from protein. It's a "human study" in that they measure leucine levels in humans, but then juxtapose that with a rodent study on rodent subjects with a genetic lipoprotein abnormality that makes them susceptible to developing atherosclerosis and what high levels of leucine does for them.

For protein snacks (besides nuts, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and boiled eggs), I like shrimp cocktail, and the shrimp is at a great price at Sam's Club. I also make a mini tuna sandwich with one slice of bread cut in half, or I put the tuna on Melba toast.

Nope, not for me. How about a nice, thick 14-ounce organic steak people?

How about black beans with quinoa? :) (I had Cuban grandparents and grew up in Miami, so I love black beans and rice.)

Black beans with quinoa actually tastes great as the foundation of a Cuban-inspired protein bowl if prepared and spiced properly, with other ingredients like avocado, red/purple onions, and feta cheese. I got the idea from a local restaurant:

PROTEIN BOWL: fried plantains / quinoa / black beans / avocado / tomatoes / mangos / red onion / maple sriracha dressing

ADD PROTEIN: CHICKEN / CAJUN SHRIMP / STEAK
