Sharps bin disposal uK

Morning all in UK. I have everything I need and I’ve just reconstituted my first vial. I have one thing I can’t find an answer to, though. Is there a recognised way in the UK to dispose of a full sharps bin? I’ve googled and can’t find a service so I wonder how the rest of you are doing it?

I'm not sure but maybe try Googling if there are any state-sponsored community reach out centers for drug use & rehab. If they don't take them they could at least point you in the right direction. I know that it's for greater public health & safety to keep things like that off the streets so my guess is there's state-sponsored locations to dispose of them safely. My wife works in the medical industry so we're pretty lucky in this respect because she just takes ours into work every couple of weeks and dumps them in their larger containers.

At your GP, and if they won't take it then at the local hospital. Some councils also do collection so check your council website. And some pharmacies will too, so ask around.

I meant to suggest checking w/hospitals too in my reply but forgot to add that part. Like I said about the outreach centers, if they don't take them they likely know who would. I think between those options you'll find a solution fo sho!

A local Pharmacy also may participate in your council’s disposal program. One convenient way to consolidate sharps is with needle clippers. They can hold up to 1500 needles and allow you to throw the syringe body away in normal trash. This could push off the disposal part a few years!

I hand mine in at my local pharmacy. Didn't know needle clippers existed. Sounds a great idea. I cringe with embarrassment at the amount of sharps I hand in 😳

Assuming it's paid off, that is. He's in the US of A like me though so everyone knows that the American way is to refi every few months to get that vacation money and leave nothing in the positive column on the estate ledger for your kiddos. 😆

If you didn't get an answer yet, GP practices sometimes accept them (I work in a GP practice) otherwise pharmacies I believe

Been to two pharmacies here and both asked me to show the prescription for the injectable medicine. I was like 'lol, peptides, self-prescribed, yolo 😏'... and so they didn't accept my bin
Now I just drop them off at my local waste/recycling facility.

Yeah most chemists/pharmacist do and some will do the "needle exchange". This means they will swap your bin for a new one and give you needles, wipes, bins ect. This is a goverment objective to support people to keep safe and use clean needles.

I use this as well, good for clean needles! Never actually given the needles back tho I just dispose of them myself, but will start doing this from now on!

I messaged my local council "waste helpdesk" - they said to "contact your local Chemist or Pharmacist and they will be able to help advise on how to dispose of your sharp items".

I am in Northern Ireland which is part of the UK, so there may be better councils in other parts of the country [it wouldn't be hard!!] that accept sharps waste. I haven't tried my local pharmacy yet - as suggested in previous posts above, I am just putting the needles in the sharps bin now and disposing of the syringe body into normal waste ... this means I have years to procrastinate and not go to a pharmacy to dispose the sharps!

A previous post on here suggested a small device that cuts the needle off the syringe safely and stores it , cannot find where I bought it or its name but it was on amazon, only 10cm x 1 x 1.5 cm and stores 1000 plus needles so very compact compared to multiple sharps bins, and you can then throw the syringes in the rubbish safely. Much less hassle.

If you don’t want to buy a special widget a pair of secateurs works just fine for cutting the business end off an insulin syringe.

Many pharmacies will take full sharps bins. My local Boots takes mine.

Remembered what the device was called for cutting off the needles and storing them. Amonior $7 Au from amazon holds 1500 needles. Much cheaper than sharps bins, safer, quicker and easier.
