Yes, you are an idiot. Yes, it's likely the API isn't present. Yes, you probably wasted your money. How do you avoid this?
1) At least find a vendor-submitted third-party test. You thought it wouldn't be worth much, but you have learnt that a salesperson's gurantee is worth less, haven't you?
2) You can wait. You can, your money definitely can. Consider your options, ask yourself, "Do I have at least one good reason to buy from this person?" You didn't ask yourself that question because you knew you didn't have an answer, you were just guessing and praying.
3) Just because you got lucky the last time you were a newbie dipping his toes in doesn't mean you'll be lucky again. It probably means you won't be lucky, really.
4) Yes, they were nice. Just because you wouldn't be able to if you knew you were selling a fake doesn't mean other people can't be.
5) Check for: reship policies and refund policies, not just in the event of seizure but also in the event of quality or purity issues.
6) Understand that you are chasing a relatively rare product, understand it can be faked, even by someone who is able to sell/synthesize common products perfectly. Let it be a fact baked into your consciousness, not just ticking a "I agree to the T&Cs" checkbox.
7) Your positive attitude, "this isn't the end of the world", it's good, it's gotten you through what you need to get through. But this? It doesn't apply here, my friend.
8) Yet at the same time, cost isn't everything. You ran the calculations. You forgot 2 things, 1 minor, 1 major. You didn't include shipping costs. You always took it as a given that the product would be at its advertised effectiveness. Leaving aside the glaring possibility of 0% API, think, what if it was at 80%, 90% API---that would still effect your cost per mg calculations.
9) You were smart to run (rudimentary) preliminary tests. I will give you that.
