I agree money is very valuable. But the consequences for getting a package seized can include losing global entry and no longer being a trusted traveler, to name a few. To my knowledge, if there is a way to buy that privilege back, it'll cost much much more than what I saved by only buying overseas.
There's no wrong answer, it just depends on what you value most. I value my freedom more than money. So, yes, I'll go on making the decisions that reflect the things I value most, even if it means spending a little bit more.
It's also worth mentioning that CBP is now implementing AI in their searches for all incoming overseas parcels. With this comes the discontinuing of the Deminimis rule, which is the rule allowing parcels less than $800 to bypass most searches and scrutiny. This means more packages will be seized without the need to be opened. So, within the next year or two, it'll be interesting how it changes the landscape.
