Smart Scales - Opinions please

More data is always a good thing, I have an older withings, was recently considering a new one from them or renpho, this one that you mentioned looks pretty interesting too.

Here’s a post that includes comments and a little discussion about a person who took his or her Renpho scale to their Dexa scan appt to compare accuracy and they were surprisingly accurate. This person is using the newer 8-point electrode scale.

I love all the data that smart scales give. $139-ish seems like a reasonable amount to spend to be able to track all of the metrics in your health journey if your smart scale is as old as yours. Mine is only about 4 years old, so I haven’t pulled the trigger on an upgrade, but it keeps moving in and out of my cart (especially every Prime Day or other made-up day to make us believe it’s “on sale.” 🤣)

I have a Hume and really like it. It produces consistent results that are a good match with what I see and feel in my body, and what the InBody (a $12K device) at the doctor's office prints out. The app does a remarkable amount of useful analysis. (I also have the Hume band. The combined data is more extensive than just the Pod provides.)

I defaulted to Withings as I was already using their BP monitor and sleep monitor. Adding their scale into the ecosystem made sense. If not for the overall ecosystem I would probably go Hume if I was starting fresh.

They won’t be as accurate as calibrated methods like a DEXA scan for body composition, but as long as the measurement method is consistent, the direction and magnitude of change can still be interpreted reliably.

Personally, I think consistently measured but imperfect readings are still useful, because the trends remain meaningful.

TYSM! I also love all the data, and I know that my current Renpho is not giving me very accurate information. It’s a starting point, but I’m very scared of the muscle loss on GLP-1s, especially as I cross over into my 50s this year. It seems like $139 for an upgraded Renpho, or slightly more for other models is probably worth the investment.

Thank you! It sounds like I’ll just be needing to determine what brand to go with when I upgrade.

I have the Hume Body Pod. I haven't had it long (black friday sale). No complaints, but I have nothing to compare it to. Prior to that I was using a standard generic amazon version, just stand on the four dots on the scale itself and it worked fine enough.

I have a Renpho. I've give up on everything except the weight. In fact, I've weighed once in probably 4 months. A glance in the mirror is more accurate to me.

You are probably correct that the mirror is more accurate. I’m just a numbers person and I love my graphs and charts. They make me happy, and it’s makes me unhappy knowing that my current Renpho is just guesstimating the stats.

Just a heads up. I received an email this afternoon from Withings that they plan to launch the Body Scan 2 this June.
thanks for the heads up I would've been annoyed if I jumped on the first one now lol

I have an older Renpho that I've used for years and I bought a Hume during the Christmas sale which I kept for a little over a week before returning. I weigh myself every morning around the same time and do it fasted because I know water can impact the readings tremendously. That said, the values I got from the Hume were all over the place and not useful for what I was looking for. Within the 8 days I had it, my skeletal muscle varied by 7.5 lbs and my individual segments yo-yo'd daily, sometimes by more than a pound. I'm just sticking with my cheap Renpho.

Oh wow!! Definitely not good. I’m glad I haven’t bought anything yet.

I just brought the Wyze Smart Scale X. Does just basic functionality and has app support. For $40 you can't beat it.

I have a Renpho and it's good for weight. The body fat and BMI and all of the metrics are just basically linear so don't trust them. I just go by the InBody at my gym.

Which Renpho model do you have? My current older model Renpho is the same, body fat etc is linear. I was considering the newer Renpho that is similar to the Hume.

I got this one for 75. Just a scale. The other metrics can't be trusted.

RENPHO Wi-Fi Scale for Body Weight, Bluetooth Body Fat Scale, Smart Bathroom Scale Health Monitor, 13 Body Composition Analyzer with Smart App

I picked up the Ablegrid body fat scale for $49.99 and had no issues connecting it to my phone using the Fitdays app. Every time I open the app and step on the scale, it connects right away. It tracks a ton of info like weight, BMI, body fat, body water, muscle, BMR, heart rate, and more. You can view your progress by recent, week, month, or year. For the price, it’s a really solid scale and definitely worth it

I really like my Hume Body Pod. I use it daily and It's always spot on with the monthly Inbody scans I get from my gym. The app is nice and easy to use and it tracks everything so I can see a nice graph of my progress. I don't think I can go back to a normal scale. I like it so much I'm considering buying the Hume band for another $250.

My GF hates it though. She said it produces nothing but hurt feelings. lmao

Renpho Elis 2x for me. Pretty accurate for something this cheap. Comparable to dexa scans which surprised me.

Also, since I love the body pod so much I was considering getting the Hume band to go along with it and track a few more metrics than my Apple Watch does. Watched a few videos about it last night and came across an interesting one claiming it’s just a rebranded cheap Chinese fitness band. Well ordered the $40 one off Amazon same day delivery and lo and behold, it connects to the app as a genuine Hume Band. So I just saved myself $210 lol. If anyone is interested, the model number is 2208A.

I really like my Hume Body Pod

Why the Hume scale over anything else? Were there other scales you considered?

How much did you get it for?

How long have you had it? How often do you use it?

Other than the weight and body composition, do you track anything else?

Do you use the app? Does the scale work without it? Have/Do you subscribed to the Hume Plus subscription service?

Can you export your data at all?

I like the accuracy of a DEXA scan, but I'd much appreciate if I could save by getting something I could get data more consistently on.

I looked at all the major scales before settling on Hume. Renpho was the only other one I seriously considered. I liked the app based model rather than having to mess with buttons and displays on the scale itself.

I got it for around $300 but it looks like that have come down in price a bit recently.

I've had it for round 6-8 months and use it every morning after using the bathroom and before my shower.

It helps me keep track of all the standard metrics like BF%, SMM, weight, water retention, and BMR. But my favorites are the Visceral fat index since I had a major problem with it before my weight loss journey, and the metabolic age because I have been putting a lot of money and time into my metabolic/cellular health so seeing it go down is nice because I'm a dopamine addict. lol

I just have the basic free version. I have thought about upgrading to the subscription but haven't really felt the need to yet. It doesn't really offer much more than the free version.

And as for the DEXA, I wish I could get them more often but at $300 a pop, it's probably going to remain a once in a blue moon thing for me. The Hume seems to get within a few % of my DEXA's and usually within 1% of my monthly InBody so I'm more than happy with it for normal tracking. If I was an IFBB pro I might not be so forgiving a percentage point or two, but I'm just a normal middle aged gym rat so it's fine for my needs.

I also got a hume body pod, next to my other digital scale, and they both weigh me right around the same twice a day. But ill be honest, after about 2 weeks I stopped using the bodypod for the scan cause I just got lazy lol
