Was this worth the price tag for long term storage/hoarding?

Today I purchased an under the counter laboratory freezer that can get down to -20C (not sure what that is in freedom units but I know it’s cold) it has alarms and a bunch of bells and whistles, when I read the description just seemed like stuff to tell me if it was cold or not haha. It ended up being just shy of 100 USD after tax and fees. Is something like this really all that useful for long term storage/ will it make a difference vs a normal fridge? I’ll post the listing below of the freezer. Just looking for some input, worst case scenario I have a little freezer with some neat stickers on it! Full disclosure this was a impulse buy but I thought it was cool!

If it helps you sleep at night, it's all that matters.

My wife would kill me if I bought anymore goodies for the ridiculous hobby. I call it a hobby because I like buying the Reta and supplies. This should be pointed at me.

Every time I say I’m done buying stuff I watch a video or see a “good deal” and I’m back on coinbase buying Bitcoin to transfer to my other wallet

Seems like good deal. I paid twice that for mine off Amazon. Should be good for storage out to 5 years. I added hydropeak containers to help keep the temp steady and protect against power loss. Also filled empty space with ice packs. It stays a little colder and the temp is more stable. It would also keep longer if I lost power.

It validates what I did so its obviously a smart decision.

That is an absolute steal. Lab equipment is expensive and your freezer is cheaper than the regular mini fridges at your local Wally World or the Zon.

It's absolutely worth the price for long-term storage.

Since it's lab equipment it's more likely to maintain the -20 deg more consistently than consumer grade products you find at your local store.

That unit is over $1200 new, does it work and is there more than one? 😆

it was a government liquidation of a lab auction so I’m not sure if it works but there was more than one and a ton of full sized upright freezers that went for like 20-100 bucks. But as it was an auction I was hesitant to post it here in fear of you guys buying the unit I wanted haha. The other unit that was basically identical ended up going for 110 I think.

-20C is only -4F or so. That's not much cooler than a normal freezer. Temperature consistency is probably a bigger factor.

A temperature data logger would be good to have, if you're curious.

That’s a good look I’ll look into that or I could probably make my own with a arduino or PI

I guess you just don’t have a basement freezer. I keep mine down there. 9 storage boxes in mine. 63 vials in each

Put that bad boy up on ebay for 4-500 and make a little mad money.

recording digital thermometer works great---reset zero whenever...freezer thermometer digital ... sub $10 amazon...

That's fair. A true NIST traceable data logger is significantly more than he spent on the freezer.

-20 isn’t very cold for a lab freezer. My chest freezer runs at -40c (conveniently-40c is -40f)
Curious what the point is here. My garage freezer is -10*. Honestly curious what the difference is. All the frozen meat, is frozen. What's the difference?

Yea frozen is frozen I agree. I do know the lower the temp the less degradation there is generally. The more of the point of the purchase was 2 fold, 1 a place for the peps to be out of the way and consistently frozen, and two to not hog the freezer from my roommates who are also in college lol.

The bigger deal in my mind is that in a living space where roommates share the communal freezer that door is opening potentially quite frequently. Having your own space devoted to the peptides allows for a much more stable storage temp. Also and I'm not 100% sure on this but aren't most lab freezers not the frost free type used in residential models, so it will avoid defrost cycles which also create temp swings that can lead to degradation in theory.
