So apparently as of today there is a new 10% tariff on all goods from China. Anyone know how this is going to work for peptide purchases? I expect it will increase costs but how does the tariff actually get paid? At what part of the purchase/shipping/import/customs/delivery process does this happen?

I just did a bunch of reading on this and think I can answer my own question. The tariff is paid by at customs by whoever imports the product. Given my understanding of how peptides are shipped it's likely the freight forwarder/special line that handles this. So all we will see is slightly higher prices.

Maybe slightly, or maybe vendors will use this a justification to increase pricing. They will pay 10% on the declared value, there is no telling what that value is for the skin products they are importing. Could be a value of $10 per kit, which would increase the cost by $1.

It really should not have any impact on prices. It’s not like vendors of these items were EVER being taxed or paying a tariffs up til now.
I disagree. The issue is the de minimis change. Most of what is sent is sent using this rule that means it comes in tax free. Thats changing

“The tariffs will have no exemptions, and the executive action Trump signed Saturday will close the so-called de minimis loophole that had allowed shipments of $800 or less to come into the United States tax-free — a key provision used by many American small businesses but also Chinese companies such as Shein and Temu. Trump administration officials said the loophole prevented customs officials from properly inspecting those packages.”

We will know soon enough.

I hit a pay wall saying I read too many CNN articles for free.

The only executive order I saw posted on the White House site concerned Canada. White House officials told the Washington Post that Trump signed two other executive orders. It's hard to say without reading the orders what they mean.

CBP released their own proposal on Jan 21 to mostly close the de minimis exemption.

Interesting quote from this link:
“According to CBP, some companies exploit the de minimis exemption to conceal shipments of illegal and dangerous products or circumvent the payment of duties and taxes. As of July 30, 2024, 89 percent of all cargo seizures since Oct. 1, 2023, were de minimis shipments, including 97 percent of narcotics and 72 percent of health and safety seizures.”

Going to be keeping my ear close to the ground on this one.

Yeah but I am assuming the markups on these products are high.... so tariffs are based on what the estimate worth is , not sales price?. If they are going to be more carefully scrutinizing product to determine its valuation for tariffs won't that lead to more seizures?

Might already be too late for that. I was thinking of placing an order on Monday after CNY is up but who knows when all this goes into effect and how it might affect lines. I doubt the vendors will even know themselves. It is just going to be trial and error for a while.
Or order from a vendor that has some stock in a US domestic warehouse. I placed such an order yesterday.

The De Minimis thing is pretty miserable if you do much international shopping in general. Even when the cost is negligible it slows the process down quite a bit - every item I've imported where I had to pay a tariff on it took 2-3x as long to get through customs.

My expectation is that the Administration will be busy with "government efficiency", so there'll be far too few people to enforce the massive volume of formerly de minimis shipments.

This is my thinking, with hundreds of thousands of new shipments now available for potential inspection, CBP will be spread even thinner. Seizures may go up but I can't see any way that they can inspect/intercept a large percentage of them when all of the Aliexpress and Temu orders are now included in the potential inspection process.

Also seems extremely likely the current administration is going to change it significantly.

Feeling like my pep hoarding may come in handy.
De-minimis-trade rule changes were actually proposed by Biden but Trump will likely support it.

From the @touringsedan linked article:

Shipments claiming de minimis have soared more than 600% over the past decade to over 1 billion items in fiscal 2023, according to Customs and Border Protection data.

Finding peps being imported is like looking for a needle in a haystack for CBP. It seems like this change just made the haystack a LOT bigger.

Shein has been funding my weight loss wardrobe lately. This is devastating. 🥲 My local thrift stores aren't worth the price, it's all shein clothes but somehow marked up even higher.

Was that Amo? I want to place an order with them but I'd be a new customer so I'm just sitting here waiting for their site to come back up. 🥲

Man Canada is gonna be erased off the map, Trudeau wants to apply 25% tariff for stuff from the US.

Things are gonna cost a fortune here in not too long

We’ve tried this one before and it always gets out of hand — let’s take another whack at it. Please keep it to the topic of tariffs as they relate to peptides, if you veer into pure off-topic political commentary it’ll be removed and a flip of a coin on whether that comes w a thread ban.

Never knew about how imports worked, but this seems it would have a huge impact on how our peptide are imported.

Also seems extremely likely the current administration is going to change it significantly.

I had suspected I was being paranoid when I was hoarding. Now it seems I was right. Of course a month from now this whole thing may have blown over.

I think a tariff is the least of our concerns. We haven't paid sufficient duties on the items we are importing. I don't know about your supplier, but mine lists the item as kitty litter on the invoice.

Even still, kitty litter is also going to be subject to additional tariffs so we’ll see prices increase. These things are not being applied in a surgical manner.
