Start off with my love for the pride of Golden Colorado and also food adorned in corn meal and baptized in oil. Got a lot of that sorted with Reta. My doctor gave me a piece of paper allowing me to procure allopurinol (sp.?) a number of years ago and it’s a miracle drug.

Flash forward 3 years and I’m trying to get down to my fighting weight. Beer is all but gone. Cardio 3-4 days a week. Strength training 4-5 days a week. Protein. Protein is important. Especially when using GLP’s and limited caloric intake. Prioritize protein when you can. They say 2grams per KG of weight. My scale said 314 this AM. That’s a lot of protein I “need” to keep up. I use shakes. Lots of them since I can’t eat anyway. Get 80-120 grams each day this way.

(Pic for effect hereIMG_4648.jpeg. OCD is real in my garage fridge.)

Easy enough. Problem is gout is creeping back. Internet lies a lot. Has anyone else inflamed gout via protein shakes? Only trigger I can point toward. Labs again end of month to measure for sure, but my ankles don’t lie. Thoughts?

Oh god. I'm really going to do this. I'm really going to say this. I'm not a doctor please talk to your doctor.

When dealing with my rescue reptilian housemates (yes for real this isn't some coded research subject language) gout is usually triggered by kidney issues, dehydration, a diet much too high in protein, or- and this is key- starvation.

You've mentioned nothing about your diet other than you 'used to' sustain yourself on cornmeal and oil, and you've posted a refrigerator completely devoid of anything but liquids. What are you actually eating? How much water are you drinking? Are you surviving on nothing but zero sugar Gatorade, protein drinks, and the occasional sweet tea? I'm not trying to be rude, I'm going off the provided information. You said this is your garage fridge, so I assume this is not an accurate representation of your actual diet.

Ok, as I understand you are on allopuronol, but no doses written, and how is your eGFR (kidneys) doing ?
You are trying to loose weight, and you only use liquid protein shakes as a calorie source.
You now have more Gout problems.
I get a little bit worried.
You should have a varied diet, and you should as a minium get your kidneys checked out with a bloodtest.

I do have another refrigerator in the kitchen complete with vegetables and dairy products thankfully. Usual dinner is lean protein meat prepared various ways, one or two vegetables, and a starch of some sort. Lunch is some sort of child portioned meal as well.

I do have a varied diet is what I’m saying. I just happen to take in a lot of protein. Was wondering if anyone can shed light on how much protein can contribute to gout? I also have annual physicals complete with all normal bloodwork. Nothing out of range, even uric acid levels.

Also, that’s unsweet tea. We can enjoy that in Texas without surrendering our drivers license contrary to popular belief. Sugar makes me jittery lol.

Gout freakin sucks!!! I haven’t had a flare up in several years thankfully. Every time I had a flare up it was due to increased intake of purines from foods such as grapes, spinach, beans, lentils, cauliflower, asparagus, and red meats. If you’re drinking a ton of protein shakes make sure you’re drinking enough water to help with flushing. Maybe go with a plant based protein powder or shake for a bit. I personally use “garden of life” vanilla protein powder and mix it with unsweetened vanilla almond milk.

I don't think anybody knows really. But I would get a blood test kidneys etc, since it's flaring up. You may need to up your dose on Allopurinol depending on level of uric acid.
Glad about your diet.

I once had a bout of gout. I was so offended, thinking it was a Henry VIII thing. I am plagued by kidney stones, which are the product of dehydration and too much red meat. Guess when this happened? Around the New Year, after consuming a diet of champagne and steak for the past month. (And exaggeration, but it was the holidays!)

Haven’t had it since realizing what I consume actually matters!

We are what we eat.

This is what I found when looking into the subject:

How Protein Powder Affects Uric Acid Levels:
Purine Content: Some protein powders, particularly those derived from animal sources (e.g., whey, casein), contain purines. Purines are metabolized in the body to produce uric acid.
Increased Protein Intake: Consuming high amounts of protein can increase the workload on the kidneys, which are responsible for eliminating uric acid. This can lead to a buildup of uric acid in the body.

So, try to switch over to more plant based protein sources.
Increase water intake. Set an alarm to remind yourself to drink water if you must. Keep water on hand at all times. More vegetables? In an effort to meet you where you are .. maybe add super greens powder into your diet.

edited to add: Ah, just saw that the picture is your garage fridge. The part about switching to vegan protein drinks and super greens powder is still valid though.

You don’t even have a scrap of chewable food in there! 😂

I remember When Julia Roberts opened up the cupboard and saw the cans all lined up like this. She was terrified because she knew you were in the house🤣

After that informational post above about uric acid I'll take this opportunity to pitch my favorite exogenous liquid protein drink.

Rockin' Protein by Shamrock Farms. Milk-based drink with 30g protein, 190cal. Loads of electrolytes, all three flavors (vanilla, strawberry, chocolate) taste great IMO and it's $2.50 a bottle 'round here (easiest to find at Dollar General). I drink them almost daily.

I just had bloodwork done and my BUN was 10, so no uric acid creep there.
