Anybody have acanthosis nigricans (velvety dark and thick skin) go away or improve with reta or any other medication? Dropped 40 pounds (started at 340) in 7 weeks so I assume I still have a lot more to go before it goes away I’m hoping. I have it around my neck and in my inner thighs.

Now that you’re addressing the root cause, look for products with either mandelic acid (my fave) or salicylic acid (still good). You’ll want to make sure you’re using spf with at least 30, I prefer mineral sunscreens, but they can be trickier to work with hating darker skin. I mix with my moisturizer. Chem sunscreens work just as well, some say better, just this esthetician’s personal choice.

The most important thing is to keep going with your weight loss and if you have it, correcting your insulin resistance.

(Though I am an estie, always check with your doc and go low and slow. These are acids. Some people try to start with products that have 35% and that is a no! Think more like 5% or 8.)

Had the same issue, tried so many things to get rid of it. Linked mainly to insulin resistance or hormonal issues. Found about reta 7-8 months ago, started on it & shedded a lot of the weight and the velvety dark and thick skin disappeared. Mine was around my neck too and armpits. Good luck! it does get better.

Yeah I’m a Fitzpatrick 4-5 and I’ve put tretinoin and hydroquinone as well as the remedyskin dark spot (yellow bottle) around the areas and the thickness of the creases has significantly decreased but obviously the pigment is still there.

Mandelic acid is something I’ll try out.
