CH.. CH.. CH.. CHANGES @ 2 YEARS

Not selling out is a huge win for all of us! I have only been involved heavily in two car forums, one sold out and was destroyed imho and don't spend more than 5-10 minutes a month there. The other went with tasteful top banners and a section where vendors can advertise. Vendors can discuss things in general and offer help in other sections but no sales. 6-7 years later it is the number one niche site for the hobby and check in multiple times a day. You are on the right path.
Don't. Even. Get. Me. Started. On. Car. Forums!

I've been involved with countless car groups for 40 years, have been on a number of club boards/committees (down to 1 now), and have owned, been admin/mod, or involved with I can't even count how many. phpBB, IPB, vBulletin, Xenforo, etc. and Usenet, CompuServe CB Chat, and BBSs before that. The one universal constant with all of them is never-ending chaos; questions about ownership and how to fund upkeep/improvements, group buy disasters, advertising debates, paid or free classified sections, yada, yada. Just typing that got my blood pressure up lol!

Hopefully with the help of everyone here I'll be able to use many of the lessons learned from all of those wonderful and terrible experiences to help continue to build this into an important and reliable resource for a long time to come!

I'm extremely appreciative of the sacrifices you've made to benefit the community. This is the healthiest I've been in a long time. Had I not ended up here, I'm sure the outcome would have been different. I would even pay a subscription fee to be part of this. You have my support in whatever direction you see fit. Thank you ♥️

How can it possibly cost $2000+ per month just to host a forum? There are a ton of cheap hosts with unlimited storage out there. Who is the host?
There are a lot of other costs to take into account when hosting your own place. Besides a hosting provider and domain name registration there is security, VMs, backups, DDoS protections, firewalls, forum software, maintenance, improvements, etc. etc. etc -- everything adds up very fast. Sometimes you even need to hire someone well versed in systems to work out an issue or problem (cause we all aren't experts in these things).

People do easily spend $2k and more per month. But they are not necessarily shopping around. The guy I used to help me with some things was very affordable:

It would be hard to imagine anyone who knows more about managing Xenforo than Ken, except for maybe a few Xenforo employees. He is good for automating as much as possible, reducing the need for future human intervention.

This past Sunday marked a special milestone: our community's second birthday!

I am continually amazed and gratified to see how much we've grown. We are now a community of over 12,000 members, and it's humbling to know how many people we've helped on their journey to better health with GLP-1 agonists.

From the beginning, my goal was to create an independent space that encouraged the free exchange of information and ideas, and most importantly remained free from the editorial whims of large corporations. I wanted a place where we could discuss topics openly without the constant fear of our group being shut down as so many others have been and continue to be on a daily basis. I'm proud to say we've succeeded in that mission so far, standing as one of the few stable outposts for these important discussions, and our continued growth shows just how important it is to be a reliable presence.

The Challenge of Growth

From the initial launch, I committed to funding this forum entirely out-of-pocket to ensure our content remained unbiased. For the first 18 months, this was manageable, averaging around $100-$200 per month, plus annual renewal costs for the Xenforo forum software and add-ons.

Our incredible growth has recently created significant challenges: in the last six months, our monthly operating costs have skyrocketed to nearly $2000 due to increased traffic and storage. We’re also facing a mandatory migration to a more robust server infrastructure to handle our current and future needs, which will bring substantial one-time and ongoing expenses.

A Necessary Evolution: Introducing Vendor Sponsorships

This brings me to an important, and necessary, evolution for our community. To address these rising costs and ensure our long-term survival, I am introducing a paid advertising/sponsorship model for vendors.

I realize this is a significant change, and I want to be completely transparent about what this means - and what it doesn't mean. I also realize that some of you will be disappointed, even upset, and I want to try to clear up any potential concerns. The most important thing to know is that my dedication to the independence and free exchange of information on this forum has not and will not change.

To clarify these new policies and what is and is not changing:

  • I AM NOT FOR SALE: Contrary to occasional rumors, prior to this change, I have never accepted a single penny, free product, or any compensation whatsoever from vendors. My only request has been fair treatment of our members. I have also refused a handful of lucrative offers by vendors to sell the forum outright. Paid advertising does not and will not change this.

  • Accountability is Non-Negotiable: Paying for advertising does not buy immunity. Any vendor who violates forum rules, mistreats or defrauds members, delivers substandard products, or compromises community safety will be suspended or banned without hesitation. This is explicitly detailed in our vendor agreements.

  • Zero Editorial Influence: Vendors will have absolutely no influence over member reviews or any other user-generated content. In the coming weeks, we will be improving the vendor review section to encourage more feedback, helping everyone make the most informed decisions possible.

  • Limited and Defined Privileges: There will be two tiers or “levels” of sponsorship. A standard level identical to the current vendor experience, and a "Premier" level which grants three specific, additional benefits/privileges:
    1. A Dedicated Sub-Forum: They will have their own sub-forum to post marketing content, which must still adhere to all community rules (e.g., no discussion of AAS, PEDs, etc.), but where they can post as much and as often as they like.

    2. A Shared Banner Ad: A single, small banner ad will be added to the site in the coming days. Premier Vendors can have one ad per month included in this rotating banner. The number of Premier slots will be limited to start, and will be evaluated regularly.

    3. General Discussion: Premier Vendors will be permitted to participate in the Public Square section, but remain strictly prohibited from any sales-related talk there. This allows knowledgeable vendors to contribute to general conversations on topics like customs or shipping logistics, etc. This is something I have allowed for a couple of vendors in the past, mostly with good results. This privilege will be closely monitored and I won’t hesitate to revoke it if abused.
Other Changes

An advantage of moving to a paid advertising/sponsorship model is that it will allow us to add some new and exciting features to the forum, including the return of the live chat function that we had for the first year or so. I also hope to add some AI and automation to things like the user registration process, spam detection, and post moderation for newer members, along with improvements to search functionality.

There will also be a renewed policy of all research discussion being restricted to the Research Lab section of the forum (as has always been the intent). More information will be released on this change in coming days/weeks, but it’s a change that needs to be made, and will be part of a minor overhaul of the overall organization and layout of various forum sections.

The Personal Side

On a personal note, some of you may know from direct conversations or little hints I’ve dropped along the way that I took an unplanned early retirement in April, which was about 16 months ahead of schedule. My accountant made it clear that continuing to spend a couple thousand dollars each month on my hobby - however fulfilling - is not a sustainable long-term strategy (and is more than my mortgage payment). I briefly considered a donation model but felt it could create a perception that donating grants favoritism or special privileges. The sponsorship model, with its clear boundaries, is the fairest and most stable solution.

Ultimately, this decision was made to keep our community alive, thriving, and self-sufficient for years to come. A modest income from what has become a full-time job for me will also be welcome and not something I want to conceal from you.

Your Voice Matters

Again, I realize that some of you may not like this change; some of you may even consider leaving for other platforms. I’m sorry if you feel this way and hope you will stick around for at least a little while to see how things play out. Social media regarding GLP-1s and similar inventions - even an old-school threaded forum like this - is going to remain quite fluid for the foreseeable future, with a little occasional chaos sprinkled in for adventure, and that constant change means sometimes adjusting our expectations.

Unlike most announcements, I am leaving this thread open for discussion. Your feedback is important, whether you are supportive or have concerns. I want to ensure everyone feels heard, and look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Thank you for being a part of this incredible community! It’s the first thing I wake up to every morning, and the last thing I check in on every night, and I take great satisfaction in whatever contributions this forum can make to improve the knowledge, health, and lives of our members and guests. Whether you've been here for the past 2 years, or just joined 2 minutes ago, I am truly grateful for each and every one of you!

And of course, thank you for taking the time to read this absurdly long treatise! (In case you were wondering, yes, I used AI to help polish this. The original draft was around six pages, so some phrasing may not sound exactly "like me," but I have read and re-read every word to ensure it accurately represents everything I wanted to convey.)

With growth comes growing pains! Seems like the best route out of the options available. At least there’s no banner ads 😇

I'm not against it at all. The rent has to be paid some way. If we have to show a little leg to do it, that doesn't hurt my feelings. As long as we are free to discuss the pros and cons of all the vendors openly then why not. Put up that banner and let's get some bills paid.

Apparently it drives up bandwidth and storage costs when people post questions without bothering to read the answer that was already given in that very thread.
I do like the chatty aspect of this forum- none of them know-it-all young 'uns walking across my lawn. I am willing to pay a "wise ass tax" to keep that feature.

The information on this forum has been extraordinarily helpful for someone new to learn from others' experiences and for me to chart my course on becoming a healthier person. TL;DR - why not also soliciting funds from us, the primary benefactors of this information? Wikipedia does this. I'd be happy to send some crypto or PayPal (won't be a huge amount but anything helps).

Note that $2k / month seems quite a bit in terms of operational expenditures for a forum. Is most of that cost egress costs for traffic or the underlying compute infrastructure? I work in the industry with a major public cloud service provider and our platforms that see a decent volume of traffic and store a bunch of data / have active DR regions don't cost much more than this...

You're a great man brother and we all appreciate you even though we don't tell you. Thanks for everything and know you've added 100,000 years to our lives collectively.... the Social Security Admin is not particularly fond of you however. @ZippityDooDah

The donation/tip jar model just can't offer any kind of revenue stability or predictability, and I didn't want to create any situations where anyone thought they earned any kind of special treatment from being a donor, especially for bad behavior.

I'm going to reply separately below to avoid the appearance that I'm replying to you directly, because that isn't my intent. 🤪

This will be the final post regarding the cost and other details related to operating/hosting this forum. And by final, I mean final; by myself and everyone else. Anyone who wants to talk tech is welcome to DM me.

We are not discussing the best gardening techniques or quilting patterns here. We are discussing topics that certain powerful organizations and entities would prefer to prohibit so there are OpSec (Operational Security) issues that require limiting the amount of specifics that can be shared. I don't know how to better explain this, but if you've been a member of a Facebook, Discord, Telegram, Reddit or other group that has been censored or eliminated because of the content being discussed you can hopefully understand why sharing specifics is not in our best interest.

As part of the OpSec measures in place, this forum is hosted overseas in more than one data center. This isn't something GoDaddy or Hostinger or any of the other mass-market discount web hosting providers is going to provide for $9.99 a month, and there are a very small handful of countries where the services required are available. I assumed this would be something everyone would realize and with a little "reading between the lines" understand why I can't just post a detailed architecture diagram or copies of invoices for everyone's reading pleasure. This was a poor assumption on my part and I apologize. I finally understand why some platforms are so obsessed with research animals and code-speak.

In addition to "routine" costs, are also factors such as FUP or Fair Use Policies that hosting providers have in place to regulate certain aspects of their services, including "unlimited" data. The largest increase in costs recently is due to FUP surcharges which if I had not agreed to pay would have resulted in the forum being cut off or severely throttled. For those who aren't aware or weren't around, after some mentions on TikTok and elsewhere we went from a few thousand hits per day to a few thousand hits per minute in under 48 hours, and that traffic level sustained for a number of weeks and is still many hundred times higher than our average traffic for the previous ~18 months.

That doesn't even begin to include additional necessary services like backups, mirroring, caching, security, etc. Just like a "minor" home improvement project, it doesn't take much for costs to start adding up quickly. Part of what nobody seemed to read in my original post is that I am working with the webhosts to mitigate those costs my moving to dedicated servers with much higher bandwidth allowances and features, but those changes also carry costs and the MRCs (monthly recurring costs/charges) are still going to be higher than a couple hundred bucks a month.

I realize many of you have experience and even expertise in some of these areas and are genuinely trying to be helpful. Please understand that I'm not dismissing that, but based on comments thus far the first thing that seems to get universally overlooked is the unique nature of this forum and resulting OpSec requirements. I genuinely appreciate those of you who have reached out via DM offering to help with various technical aspects as well!

Many of these are things that I have been doing professionally since the early 90's, over half of which has been in the defense sector. Combine that with the fact that from starting my first BBS in 1987 to owning, operating, or being deeply involved with dozens of forums in support of my various hobbies over the past 35+ years and hopefully you can see that this is not my first rodeo (I readily admit that this is my first time contending with many of the unique aspects of a hobby that a whole lot of powerful interests would prefer not exist; but hosting is still hosting, infrastructure is still infrastructure, and traffic is still traffic).

Are there better, more robust, and more economical solutions available? Without a doubt. Am I in a position to make that all happen in a few weeks? Absolutely not. Frankly I'd like to eventually jettison Xenforo in favor of a 100% custom solution, but that is not going to happen overnight, and probably not for at least a year or more.

I really hope this settles these questions once and for all. If you think I'm lying about the costs, just say so publicly -- right here. I don't want anyone to feel like they are being forced to remain here against their will or that I'm somehow defrauding them by charging vendors for advertising to help offset forum costs and generate a modest income. I've said from day one that there is plenty of room out there for countless platforms discussing GLP-1's and peptides and I'm fully supportive of any efforts to help spread information and share knowledge about these miraculous inventions, so if you're no longer comfortable here I'm confident there are other venues that will better meet your expectations.

Thanks once again for taking the time to read all of these words.

I don't think people asked questions because they think you're lying, but to possibly save you money. At least that was my angle.

I'm new here, but I get it. Everybody's got to make a living somehow. The fact that your being transparent about it makes it a-okay in my book. If it weren't for this forum, I wouldn't have been able to continue my journey to get healthier. I appreciate you and the work you do. I'm not sure if that means much coming from an absolute stranger, but I do mean it.

You're right for the most part, but based on a couple of DMs there's at least a couple of people that seem to think I'm trying to run some kind of scam by announcing that I'm going to accept money from vendors and then spend that money.

I'm usually not one to give a shit about what anyone says or thinks about me or my motivations, because I genuinely don't care, but the chaos of dealing with all of this for the past several weeks is beginning to wear thin.

Fortunately I have a BBQ to get to, with a brisket that's been on the smoker since 6AM. 🥩
