GLP-1 Apprentice
T2D, diagnosed with a 10.4 A1C some years ago. I've been on mounjaro since last year, paying $650/mo out of pocket with manufacturer's coupon, and it's been worth it as it let me quit all my other diabetic meds. But despite all this, I've never been able to get a prior authorization approved. Fine, w/e, just the medical system in the US. But this year I made the blunder of switching insurance to Kaiser because they had an HSA plan. I figure since the only med I need I have to pay out of pocket anyways, I might as well just get a HDHP w/ HSA. Did not see the obstacles coming my way on that one.
The pharmacy I used to get my meds at, Publix, could no longer use my manufacturer's discount card because it has to be attached to a commercial insurance plan, and Publix can't interface with the Kaiser system. I tried the Kaiser pharmacy, but they won't take discount cards. So then I try to get my RX transferred out of the Kaiser pharmacy to Walgreens, which is a minor nightmare and takes over a week. During this time, I have my doc send a new script over to Kroger because at the time I thought Kroger would work with the Kaiser system (turns out they won't). So finally I get the RX transferred over to Walgreens, which becomes its own nightmare as they can't get the med in stock. Pharmacist essentially tells me they can't order it specifically for me, they just have to wait and see if it gets shipped with everything else. OK, strange, but w/e.
At this point, I start looking at what the med would cost with RX discount coupons at Kroger because I have a script there and a script sitting in limbo at Walgreens. Finally find a coupon that gets me the med for just over $700 at Kroger. Kroger gets the med in in a day, I pick it up, finally feel relieved after a two week long nightmare.
At this point, I'm still hoping Walgreens will fill my other script at the usual $650 discount price. But nope, not long after I pick up the Kroger script, Walgreens for w/e reason cancels the script entirely. Was in the evening, doctor's office didn't do it. But in any case, all the refills on it gone, can't order it again. Why? Who knows.
So yeah, after this year, I plan to switch off Kaiser and back to a more regular insurance plan. Despite the med having always been $650/mo before, at least it wasn't hard to fill and things were predictable.
That's all I've got. Just a vent. At least I got my meds now, and they work, and on a positive note, I'm glad I found this drug.
