GLP-1 drugs and drug addiction

This paywall-free articles discusses the use of GLP-1 drugs for drug addiction: Szalavitz (Oct. 14, 2025). Opinion - The Drug That Took Away More Than Her Appetite. New York Times. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/14/...e_code=1.tU8.1FQq.fYLnGx8pvUJh&smid=url-share.
My RS is experiencing some of these exact benefits as well as ADHD/emotional balancing.

It absolutely blows me away, to suddenly comprehend just how incredibly much of - at least my - behavioral, emotional, psychological, etc. tendencies are hugely driven by what appears to be an insulin-imbalance - because now after going on 5 months of tirz my person feels like "Oh - so this is what normal people do and how they act and react and, and , and."

I quit smoking cold-turkey one day in July - just because and had zero issues.

It really blows my mind.

I love that you share this. I've read some articles on how it can help with additions, ADHD and impulsive behaviors.
My son struggles with combined type ADHD and emotions are hard for him, amongst other things that most ADHD people struggle with.
He just started about 2 weeks ago, on Tirz, so I'm praying this helps him in more ways than it helps me. Not only with his mind but his weight and addition to food.

I had a similar experience… at first. Not long after starting Tirz my ASD symptoms were greatly reduced. I thought the same thing you thought, “Ah, so this is what it feels like to be normal.” My anxiety reduced a lot and my mood heightened.

That lasted for months, but then I slowly crept back to being crazy again. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Oh well. It was like that movie “Awakenings” with Robert De Niro where the cruel punchline was that the people who suffered from encephalitis lethargica were “cured” for a short time, but then went back to their afflicted state.

At least my love for red wine has pretty much died. 🍷🪦
Haha.

Yeah, good movie. Robin Williams...
Maybe a break from Tirz and reintroduction?
Maybe Sema or Reta might produce what I presume were states you prefer to "the crazy", as did Tirz? I don't know. Just thinking out loud.
🙏

That was my experience as well, it helped at first, had the epiphany of , 'really, people just decide to do something and do it???' But yes, slowly back to "normal", my normal, which I fear is not normal at all.....
Yob's analogy ( and your similar experience ) is actually really good then- Awakenings. In the film the Doc ( Williams ) kept increasing the dose to get results.
I don't see why your experiences wouldn't merit a type of clinical trial specifically for what it is ( ASD? ) that ails you. I would imagine there are more than the two of you with these experiences. Or is it an ailment that it is just "it is what it is" and people pay it no mind? Your two posts made me think it's a concern for you guys, at least.
I imagine there's a process of appealing to/lobbying the right people ( and for money ) to do these sort of things?
But hey, what do I know?
🙏

My lab rat finally quit smoking after 5mg tirz every 5 days. Been trying for a long time, constantly failing in social situations when there was a vape around, cigs around, etc. As of a few weeks ago, been off the nicotine and haven’t been tempted.

Good question. I don’t really see any research done except this article about Sema reducing “autism-like” behaviors in rats.

It seems like GLP-1s have a lot of unintended benefits for a lot of people. For some, the benefits stick. For others, they don’t. It all seems to be a mystery. 🙃

I’m actually just thankful I’m not drinking two glasses of red wine a night anymore. In the ‘90s doctors said “Drink red wine! It’s great for the heart!” Now it’s, “Drink one glass and you die.” I miss the ‘90s. Great economy, no deficit, lots of jobs, and all the red wine you want. 😂

Can’t wait till 2035 when doctors say the same thing about GLP-1s. 🙈

You shouldn't let your lab rat hang around such a group of nicotine smoking ne'er-do-wells or even buy him smokes, for that matter.
🤭

Congrats and welcome to the miracle of balanced physiology!

A little more disclosure...... I am in successful (meaning years long) recovery from multiple chemical addictions ... and even though I have been experiencing serenity and freedom from those dragons for many 24 hours, there has always still been a twist in my thinking and emotions that very oddly has pretty much completely dissipated after time-in-current-service.

Again - experiencing this "So this is how 'normal' people navigate."

So trippy. So grateful.

I still enjoy all of my vices and have not quit any of them.

I partake in them far (far) more infrequently, though.

Quit the Copenhagen at 40, 5yrs before GLP's. That was tough, we had been together since 7th grade. While still able to enjoy a whiskey today, the hangover from too many is greatly exaggerated with Reta. To the point of making me pause and go on to bed at night. I'm guessing it's the dehydration, something is different and it's not worth it to have just one more pour. Not a bad side effect though!
