I just ordered the new "milk chocolate" flavor of SlimFast Protein Shake with 100mg caffeine, 20g protein, and 1g sugar:

But the other flavors are on sale as well (for subscribe & save).

It seems they all have 20g of protein and only 1g of sugar.

The other flavors:

Caramel Macchiato Energy
Chocolate
Chocolate Energy
Vanilla

Fair life chocolate is my brand.
Their chocolate milk is the best ever. Not so much their protein drinks, but I only tried their weird strawberry banana flavor so far. Taste-wise for a protein drink, I like Boost brand the most (thanks to the sugar, zero fiber, and I guess Nestle chocolate).

I haven’t had one in ages. I just got some fair life protein shakes, but most protein drinks are just too sweet. Artificial sweeteners are just tooooooo sweet for me to tolerate. Boost is my favorite too, for all the reasons you listed. How sweet are the Slim Fast shakes?

I don't know 😀 I have only tried the original SlimFast, which has more sugar. I am hoping the new energy flavors taste great, or at least more interesting than most.

I just tried a different protein drink from SlimFast (High Protein Creamy Chocolate). Despite the positive reviews, it had a very artificial taste and a bad aftertaste, so now I have trust issues with SlimFast in general.

Oh boo. 😒 I hope the milk chocolate one is better..

I got it at my health food store, but it is at Amazon too. It is called marine collagen, which sounds less worse.

I did not realize it tasted so horrible, or I would have gotten the capsules. But the powder was on sale 😀

And now you know why, lolol. I got collagen from Hearthy, no tast. Didn’t see any benefits so I stopped it. 🤷🏼‍♀️

When I started this adventure I went to black coffee in the morning and cut out all half and half and sweetener. As a treat, to have my cream coffee, I would use vanilla protein shake and coffee after lunch, protein and a sweet treat- as well as cream coffee fix.
I just got my Nurri vanilla and it worked great for this.

good flavor and consistency with no vitamin after taste, 1/2 of shake with large cup of coffee for the win!

Yeah, I liked the Nurri chocolate I got today. Even though it includes monk fruit as a sweeter (which I normally don't like), the monk taste is not prominent to me like with Fairlife Core.

So, you actually can taste the Monk fruit in it?

No, I taste something though I don't like, but it's barely there. But that is true of all protein drinks for me without much sugar. For Fairlife Core, I don't really know if it's the monk fruit, but it has a wang I don't like.

So compared to other protein drinks, the Nurri is as good as it gets. Atkins is the same way for me, as good as it gets. They are both good, just different.

I'm still interested in trying the Nurri. It doesn't sound bad. I do like the Atkins, though. I will give them a shot and order soon. Thanks for getting back.

The Nurri chocolate has a slightly bitter taste for me, so it would go perfectly with coffee, like an iced mocha.

Gemini on why some protein drinks taste worse than others:

Protein drinks can have a bad taste for several reasons, often stemming from their ingredients and how they interact:

1. The Protein Source Itself:

  • Whey Protein: Some whey protein concentrates can have a slightly bitter or sour taste.1 Lower quality whey might also have a more noticeable "off" flavor.

  • Plant-Based Proteins: Pea, soy, rice, and hemp proteins can have earthy, grassy, or beany undertones that some people find unpleasant.2 These can also result in a gritty or chalky texture.

  • Casein Protein: This type of protein is naturally thick and can have a chalky texture, which impacts the overall taste experience.3
2. Artificial Sweeteners:

  • Many protein drinks use artificial sweeteners like sucralose, aspartame, and saccharin to keep the sugar content low. These can leave a lingering metallic or chemical aftertaste that many find off-putting.
3. Artificial Flavors and Additives:

  • Some artificial flavorings can taste synthetic or overly intense, contributing to an unpleasant experience.
  • Fillers, thickeners (like gums), and other additives can affect the texture, making the drink feel slimy, gritty, or overly thick, which negatively impacts the perceived taste.
4. Poor Quality Ingredients:

  • Lower-quality protein powders may use cheaper protein sources and more artificial ingredients, leading to a less palatable final product.4
5. Interactions Between Ingredients:

  • The combination of different protein sources, sweeteners, and flavorings can sometimes create unexpected and undesirable taste profiles.
6. Oxidation:

  • Over time, the fats in protein powders can oxidize, leading to a rancid or stale taste.5
7. Mesh Count:

  • In protein powders, a lower mesh count means a coarser powder, which can result in a chalky taste and texture.6 Milk-based proteins often have a higher mesh count than plant-based options.
How to Improve the Taste of Protein Drinks:

  • Choose High-Quality Protein Powder: Opt for reputable brands that use better quality protein sources and fewer artificial additives.7 Consider isolates or hydrolyzed proteins, which may have a milder taste.

  • Flavor it Yourself:Use unflavored protein powder and add your own natural flavorings like fruit (berries, bananas, mango), cocoa powder, cinnamon, vanilla extract, or nut butter.8

  • Use Milk or Milk Alternatives: Mixing protein powder with milk (dairy or non-dairy like almond, soy, or oat milk) can create a creamier and more palatable shake than using water alone.9

  • Add Yogurt: Plain or Greek yogurt can add creaminess and a slight tang that complements many flavors.10

  • Blend with Ice: This can improve the texture and make the shake more refreshing.
  • Use Natural Sweeteners: If needed, add small amounts of natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup.11

  • Experiment with Extracts and Spices: A drop or two of extracts (like vanilla, almond, or peppermint) or a pinch of spices (like cinnamon or nutmeg) can significantly enhance the flavor.12

  • Try Different Brands and Flavors:Taste preferences vary, so try samples of different protein powders to find one you enjoy. Clear whey protein is also a newer option that offers a lighter, more refreshing, and fruitier taste compared to traditional milky protein shakes.13
By understanding what contributes to a bad taste and experimenting with different ingredients and techniques, you can make your protein drinks more enjoyable.

Gemini on why some protein drinks taste worse than others:

Protein drinks can taste bad for several reasons related to their ingredients. The protein itself, whether it's whey (which can be bitter or sour, especially lower quality options), or plant-based (like pea, soy, or rice, which can be earthy or gritty), can contribute to an unpleasant flavor. Casein protein's thickness can also lead to a chalky texture affecting taste.

Artificial sweeteners, often used to reduce sugar, can leave a metallic or chemical aftertaste. Similarly, artificial flavors might taste synthetic. Fillers and thickeners can create undesirable textures like sliminess or grittiness. Lower quality protein powders with cheaper ingredients are more likely to have a bad taste. Sometimes, the combination of different ingredients can create an off-putting flavor profile. Over time, fats in the powder can oxidize, leading to a stale or rancid taste. Finally, a coarser protein powder (lower mesh count) can result in a chalky texture and taste.

To make protein drinks taste better, consider using higher quality protein powders, especially isolates or hydrolyzed options. Flavor the drinks yourself with natural ingredients like fruit, cocoa powder, or nut butter. Mixing with milk or milk alternatives can improve creaminess. Adding yogurt or blending with ice can also help. Natural sweeteners and extracts or spices can enhance the flavor. Experimenting with different brands and flavors can help you find one you enjoy. Clear whey protein is a newer option with a lighter, fruitier taste.

This one is really good.. and less 1 gram of sugar than fairlife.. Someone told me the ingredients are cleaner, but I can't say for sure.. just got 2 cases today.. at 19.99 for 12, you can't beat them..
Where did you find them for that price?

I received one of each flavor this week too at 24.99. (they are tasty!) I jumped on your link! Chocolate is currently $29.99!

First the Hospira Bac and now a protein drink no one had heard of. 🙄

What shake is closest to Nestle Quik chocolate milk?

Bonus points if they can replicate homemade chocolate milk using Hershey Chocolate syrup and whole milk.

I don't like the slim fast because they are so damn thick... all of them dry my mouth put, like instantly.. or triz though I have constant cotton mouth.. but the shakes make it so much worse..

The Nurri also tastes much better than when I first tried them. I guess they were not cold enough before. I get them super cold now, and I guess I have gotten used to whatever I was tasting before that I didn't like.
