What do you do with your old clothes?

It’s because Goodwill now runs an online auction where they let their items go to the highest bidder. That’s why I donate to shelters and churches, and if they’re not in need I take them to a rescue mission. Goodwill is no longer about serving the community-only themselves, their CEOs and boards of directors.
To be fair that was always what Goodwill was about. I just think everyone knows about it now.

I love this for you!
Thank you. I'm very happy. I'm learning to play the steel tongue drum, and I've been posting "mini-recitals" on FB every week (like a kid's piano recital, except I'm 45 and nobody has to leave the house) of whatever song I've prepped for it. The fact that I can just post VIDEO of myself, sitting down, and not take any emotional damage about "oh my face looks so fat, my belly is showing, my arms are fat, etc, and the video is just about my skill level on the drum and not how good or bad I look; I can't even wrap my head around it.

(I am not saying or implying that anyone who is heavier should not post video of themselves or that they don't look good enough or have the right to be seen or should judge their own looks enough to hide from video, because the experience of that was zero stars, do not recommend. but I'm saying I definitely did have trouble with that and I'm grateful to be released from that being a factor.)

I don’t know. I’ve been shopping there for over 30 years and it didn’t used to be. It has been like that for many years, but back in the 80’s and early 90’s it wasn’t like that. At least not to me.

Same. I knew they were getting more picky, I just didn't know how extreme they are now compared to how they used to be. They happily took all those last bags of clothes from me in 2015.

I donate stuff that is in good condition to the local school district assistance program. They help out families in need with FREE clothing (IE they don't price it disgustingly high like Goodwill does). It has to be clothing that high schoolers would wear, of course, but most plain shirts, sweaters, jeans and loungewear fits the bill.

I've donated a lot of my old clothes to Karm now. I agree with Chelsea Daggerz about Goodwill. My wife told me the other day that Goodwill holds auctions when I was going to drop some off there, so back to Karm I went.

I just bought my first pair of 34" jeans today, for the first time since I was in my 20's, 40 years ago. I'm 12 lbs from my original goal (and 20 lbs from my doctor's). I'm thrilled but this also means I have clothes, mostly jeans, pants and shorts, that are sized 34", 36", 38", 40", 42" and 44". That's 86-114cm for the rest of the world. 😮

So what did you do, or what are you going to do with a wardrobe like that? I'm pretty sure I don't want to keep the largest sizes because I never want to go back. Do I leave a couple sizes larger in the closet "just in case"? I've been here before with yo-yo weight gain. Do I have a bonfire for everything over my current size and walk the plank? I thought about Goodwill first, but the two in my town now want "lightly used" which these are not, they were lived in. I'm not sure what to keep or what to toss. What are your thoughts or what did you do?
Huge congratulations!!!

I committed to my weight loss. Some things I sold, some donated and some went into the trash.

Keep in mind, larger sizes are not abundant at thrift or donation closets.

Congratulations!! It is the best feeling to have this problem — what to do with half a wardrobe too big!

I waited for almost two years before the weight was noticeable enough to warrant shopping and purging large sizes. Then I went at the closet by season. Did a fall winter review purge and then a spring summer one.

My teenage daughter was judge and jury. Clothes just too big were set aside for shelters and we have a local donation center that gives away clothes to those in need. So that was my solution.

Then the clothes that could fit — old hoards in back of closet when through the harsh review of my daughter. She would 👍🏻or👎🏻 the item as I tried each one on. I realized just because it fit didn’t mean I wanted to wear it or that it was in fashion. So may things I kept for someday when I could fit back into it — came and then I realized ewww it’s too dated or even frumpy style. It was so liberating to just clear out all the old unflattering and out of date and only keep what fit and what was still a classic wardrobe item.

Them I made a list of items I needed or desired. And now shopping is fun and focused again. No hoarding. That energy is now for Korean skincare and peptides. 😹

Nice job! I'm looking forward to making more room. Unfortunately, I can't ask my daughter as she would nix my entire wardrobe!. She thinks I have way to many "Dad" clothes, but that's ok with me.

Keep a few, donate the rest. There are donate sites beyond Goodwill.

Oh my teen def had opinions and we didn’t agree on some things I loved. But she was great at saying what was flattering and what “aged” me. The aged me outfits hurt but then I don’t want to look like a golden girl! still I kept a few duds that I just love.

As others have said, contact homeless shelters and women's shelters. They are always looking for clean clothes, no matter what they look like or how outdated they may be.

Goodwill is a last resort, always.

Thanks. That's what I'm leaning towards, it's just that I've probably rebought two wardrobes over the years thinking the same thing. I was thinking I wouldn't be on Reta for the rest of my life when I started this, but I may need to be.
I'm right there with you if it takes me staying on a weekly injection to avoid a back slide so be it!

I am lifer for these meds. No more rebound weight.

Per my doctor—When one takes blood pressure meds or insulin — it’s for life. Those on GLP who never succeeded with weight loss are lifers. She says it’s about finding a maintenance dose but stil underlying cause (IR) is still there and needs the treatment. If lifestyle isn’t the issue it’s IR and requires meds for life.

nursing homes, thrift stores for a cause, homeless shelters.

I recently sent in a few bags of clothes to thredup (a sort of online thrift store) that were still new, unworn thinking I'd get a little extra in return to buy new stuff but they ended up not listing alot of them and I got next to nothing for them. I really wish I just donated to people who could've used them. It's a great place to buy clothes cheap after weight loss though.

Local Goodwill can use the old clothes.

During my time losing weight, Goodwill has been great to get a few pairs of pants/jeans as I pass through different sizes down to my goal. You'll be doing your fellow GLPers a favor.

Also I kept a couple of pants one size up as a way of testing if I am getting a bit thicker around the middle, if they are still super loose, then I know I am maintaining both my weight and physique.

Not my Goodwill or a lot of others. See above.

I am also in this situation. I got a whole new wardrobe for xmas as went from a size 50 pant down to a 36. have lost 100lbs in the past year and have no plans to return to that size ever again. still have another 20lbs to go and hope to be in a size 34 by springtime. plan to donate pants to local charity and i take my large shirts on vacation and leave them for the homeless.

was buying second hand clothes at Savers on the way down and they give you a 20% coupon towards your next purchase when you donate the clothes back.

That's fantastic! 🎉🎉 Congrats on your progress. I looked and we don't have any Savers in my state. That's too bad, because it sounds like a great idea.

hold them never know when you are going to relapse
You know, I've lost weight before, gotten rid of all my "fat clothes" because "I'M nEvaR gOinG bAck" and then relapsed and had to buy new ones.

I have also lost weight, and quietly kept a reasonable set of clothes at my heavier weight, because "If my worst fears come true, I will already be so depressed, and I want that poor woman to have nice clothes that fit well if it does, because she has enough problems." And when I relapsed, I was grateful to Past Me for having compassion and leaving me able to dress myself easily.

I'm unloading many, but keeping about a week's worth of the stuff that made me feel pretty even at my heaviest.

With the exception of some items I dont mind being baggy like hoodies or a sweater they are all going to the local thrift store. At one point I would have kept them but I'm hoping the weight loss is permanent, and If I need some more clothing Ill just buy it. Also anymore I wear the same thing for work 5 days a week so my clothing needs are mostly for weekends and vacation.

Even with what you have in your freezer? 😮 I'm going to tempt fate and keep a size larger and give the rest away, based on my stockpile. I kept them before and allowed myself to get bigger again.
