The patent for semaglutide is expiring next month in India and generic manufacturers are ready to supply pens on day 1. This pen sounds kind of cool.

BUT, due to US patent laws (extensions and adjustments) NN likely has patent protection here until 2041 and from what I can tell, it won’t be available in the US in generic until the mid 2040s. So, like a decade later than India.

BP is just ridiculous. I’m on a maintenance medication that costs about $1,100 per month for brand name. That drug came off patent protection in early 2024. I’m still getting 90day brand prescriptions paid by insurance. I thought that back in 2024 my first shipment would be in generic.

And besides, the existing generic India pens are just as a good as the brand name ones here, based on my liraglutide/Victoza experience. The sema pens (and vials) should eventually/hopefully be available on IndiaMart, for the curious. Brand name too maybe:

Novo Nordisk...has partnered with US drug major Abbott to launch semaglutide in India under another brand name Extensior to fight the generic competition and expand its market reach.

I would definitely like to buy one of these new pens next month if available on IndiaMart if they are available and the price was okay. I think I’d take the customs risk.
