Eli Lilly calls UK ‘worst country in Europe’ for drug prices

The US is the worst country in the world for drug prices. Hands down.
The average cost to develop a new drug for the US market? About $1 billion from start to finish.
Mounjaro came out at the end of 2022 and Eli Lilly made $279.2 million from it.
In 2023, its first full year, they made $5.16 billion in sales.
In 2024 they made $11.54 billion.
They have at least 12 more years of patent protection.

Oh .. and these numbers exclude Zepbound.

Pathetic how American pharma (i'm going to use different words/phrases that what I'm thinking here so I don't trigger people) "takes advantage of/steals from/gouges" the public for medication. And really, one can insert "insurance" or "healthcare" system" in place of "pharma". It's all about GREED vs actual health.

I think most Americans that realize this are all feeling the same way.

Here they do not want to cure you for a one time fee when they can treat you for a life time fee.

Just before I had my first injection on May 4th 2025 my BMI was 57. No insurance coverage for it. I haven't heard of anyone in my state getting a GLP1 for weight loss regardless of how high their BMI happens to be. Some insurance plans, not all, just some .. will cover weight loss surgeries if you jump through all their hoops. I had a vertical sleeve in 2016. I had to pay out of pocket for that too. I was able to get down to a BMI of 36 and was able to stay at that level for about a year before my weight started rising again.

Drives me mad that everyone knows it and hates it, yet it never gets solved because we are at each other’s throats over culture war nonsense instead of focusing on the stuff that matters.

All I'm going to say about that is this: The world has never become a better place when decisions are made based on hatred.

The color of the tie you wear in the TV spot is much more important than a meaningful policy change in US!

Back to OP, I also like when I can sell a product for more money for a longer period of time without competition. That’s the US drug market. I don’t think pharma is awarded the same level of price setting in UK and that makes the market harder. More crazy town.

Good take. Going to keep fighting the good fight by blasting stuff I get where my money goes to "Molly" instead of Eli.
