Has anyone here had a seizure because of being on a GLP1? A classmate of mine has been on MJ for I think a couple of years and is in the hospital because she has had a couple of seizures and the medical staff is telling her they think it could be her GLP1. She also stated that her blood pressure was very low and that she was still on blood pressure medication. Seems odd that after all of her weight loss over 200# that she is still on her BP medication. But I do not know her whole health history.

Wow, sorry to hear that. I can tell you from first hand knowledge that Tirz lowered my BP more than any BP medicine I have ever tried. So much that I'm looking forward to getting off my BP med if it keeps going down.

It's the first time that I have heard of a seizure on a GLP-1. Are they taking your classmate off because of that?

Yeah, my BP is down to 115ish over 70ish since I started tirz...I figured it was for exercising more and being 20lbs lighter....I hadn't thought about the tirz...

Seizures do not appear to be common side effect of glp-1 medications on their own. In this study, the authors map benefits and risks of glp-1s using a very large dataset and seizures are specifically mentioned in the abstract as having reduced risk while on glp-1s.

Are you sure it was a seizure and not your classmate passing out? Syncope is very common and might look like a seizure. It is possible to have a seizure due to very low blood pressure, but I think passing out would be more common.

Hypoglycemia might also be pausible and lead to a seizure, especially if your classmate is on a sulfonylurea.

Hope your friend feels better soon!

My Dr. told me that it has something to do with the way Tirz affects the kidneys in a positive way and in particular the way they handle sodium.

GLP may impact electrolytes levels. My sodium dropped near the danger zone at 125-126 mEq/L several months ago when my GLP dose increased to 9mg. I can’t bring it up no matter what I do.
Low sodium (hyponatremia) can cause seizures and even brain swelling, so it really should be monitored.

I expected to read about a seizures from customs. Hmm? not really heard of it from glp1's.

Funny, that is why I clicked on it, too, border seizures issues. It’s hard for me to believe that doctors would expect it to be GLP. I mean, seizures can occur from extremely low blood sugar, but GLP would at best be an extremely low contributing factor to get down that low. But it is true, folks on GLP and blood pressure medication have to look closely, because I know so many that had to drop or at least lower medication after losing weight from GLP.

I have seizures pretty bad sometimes when it's time for a medicine change. I started medical marijuana about a year ago and haven't had one since. Glp never made mine any worse than they was.

I also had to be taken off of all bp meds but one. I was on 4.

This is kind of a problem with the GLP-1 telehealths. These drugs can have profound impacts on overall health but these telehealths want to narrowly focus on selling you a weight loss medication while ignoring some of the effects of that. It’s normal for people to need to adjust blood pressure medications while taking a GLP-1 and that might not happen when it should if the provider prescribing the GLP-1 is pretending that they don’t need to pay attention to anything else.

It’s also obviously an issue for people in the gray market but a lot of them are a bit more proactive in managing their own care rather than assuming their doctors have things handled when in fact they’re not even paying attention.

typically when you ask for a refill, you have to fill out a questionnaire and they specifically ask about heart rate/ blood pressure/ any other side effects etc etc. At least the one I was using.
Not sure they actually look for anything abnormal or just ignore it.

Not sure. I am not in contact with her but she posted what little I know on her facebook page. I found it weird that they didn't watch her BP since she has lost a lot of weight.

you can have a seizure from passing out, I didn't think of that.

I wonder if she takes electrolytes. I really don't know.

Also maybe the doctors don't know what happened and just wanted to do a lot of tests and make some money.....

Mine was low last two BT. Not dangerous low though. The solution was to drink Liquid IV. I split one pack between two Gatorade bottles and drink one a day. Liquid IV is 500G sodium. I was doing both daily, but raised my BP too much. I’m back to one. I get a BP test this month. We’ll how it goes.

This is what I was thinking. I had significant Orthostatic Hypotension (large BP drop when standing up after sitting) after about 4 months on Tirz, and 40lbs lost. So much that I stopped 1 BP med entirely, and cut the other in half.

Weeks later, when I saw my Cardiologist, he agreed with my changes.

Left is sitting, right was standing, just 1 minute later. (edit this is the correct photo; last was some experiments with Metoprolol and VIP I was playing around with). IMG_4389.webp

Another 10 lbs and I may just stop taking the BP meds altogether. I really don't like how they make me feel.

Holy cow! Look at the pulse too! That’s quite a blood pressure change from the seated position. I could imagine someone passing out.

Congratulations on the weight loss! Awesome work.

That happened probably 5 or 6 times before I changed my meds. Had several very close calls, where I do think if I hadn't immediately stopped and leaned over the car hood, or dining room table, or whatever, I would have blacked out.

Scary. Glad you adjusted your meds. The changes to our bodies on these medications can be so significant that medication changes are absolutely necessary.

Theoretically glps can lower blood glucose. If glucose is low enough it can trigger a seizure.
Rare though for glucose to drop that much - even though they were developed to treat diabetes.
