To be fair this behavior is what our current medical establishment has trained us all to do. Doctors hand out a prescription and most people just mindlessly take what they are told to take. People are harmed all the time by the medical industry. It is in fact the #1 cause of death. Is taking something a trusted friend gives you all that much more dangerous? I'm not so sure that its something we can answer.
It's my understanding that the leading cause of death (both in the US and worldwide) is heart disease, which still supports the "what she's doing is technically less dangerous than not doing anything" point, to be fair. As to the second question, I guess it depends on who the friend is, but I see your point. I know humans are going to human, but man, I so badly wish they would human a little less chaotically and put some thought into it.
