Stupid shit keeps happening

I did! But maybe I'm not asking the question the right way. Google just gave me a bunch of gobbledygook as well as Claude.

What Happens Based on the Address Type
  • Valid Unowned Address: The crypto goes to an address that exists mathematically but has no owner. The funds sit there permanently inaccessible. [1, 2]
  • Valid Owned Address: The crypto arrives in a stranger's wallet. You can only get it back if they voluntarily choose to send it back. [1, 2]
  • Invalid Address: Many wallets and exchanges will detect typos or mismatched network formats and block the transaction before it is sent. [1, 2]
  • Wrong Network: Sending crypto to the correct address but on the wrong blockchain (like sending Bitcoin to an Ethereum address) can sometimes be recovered if you own the private keys to the destination wallet. [1, 2, 3]

Exodus will let you send USDC -Eth to a PYUSD -Eth address but it then it's just gone.
It was my fault, just did it in a hurry and I accept my mistake. Where is it? I don't see the answer in what you shared.

I am going to digress (because I am curious) has anyone here ever received a random payment from nowhere? I see people saying they sent to the wrong wallet so frequently, it has me wondering.

If it is a very small amount you receive randomly it could be a dusting attack.

You can transfer your ERC-20 (Ethereum network) USD Coin (USDC) to a PYUSD wallet address on the Ethereum network. Since both tokens exist on the Ethereum network as ERC-20 tokens, they are natively compatible.
Do you own the PYUSD-ETH address? The information linked earlier talks about what happens for different cases for the target address - no?

What happened though? How did you pick that particular address?

I copied the address from my PP crypto wallet and put in Exodus and sent it. Never came to my PP wallet and PP told me to pound sand when I contacted their support. Exodus told me to contact PP in French. 😄
PP changes your wallet address everytime you go to retrieve it so I couldn't go back and compare that it was the same address.

That seems very strange. I don't use PP, so can't speak to its peculiarities. But crypto in general is very traceable. There are tools to check the path of the transaction in the blockchains. And I find it hard to believe that there isn't tracking built into Exodus and PP to be able to trace the transaction.

You initially said it was "your mistake". What was the mistake in your understanding? I mean, if you actually own the target address, and there was no copy and paste error, this may be redeemable.

You may want to try this:

I can try and help, if you like. Is the amount big enough for the trouble?

It was $300. Thanks for offering to help. But then I think is this a recovery scam? I don't know you. 😄
I can see it was successful in the Etherscan transaction details page.

Yes - it is good to be careful. I withdraw my offer😛. I was a little hesitant in the first place, exactly because of how this comes across. But it seems like you know what you are doing, anyways. Good luck.

I'm am much smarter and slower when doing anything with crypto and I appreciate your offer. Still not a crypto fan. 😄

Exactly what I did, I was sending from my coinbase to my exodus and have no clue where I actually sent it 😩
The same thing happened to me and I was convinced I just lost the money. I found my mistake. Coinbase uses Base as default network and I missed that when sending USDC to an Exodus address on the Sol network so my transfer never showed up.

Before giving up, I asked ChatGPT if there was any way to recover the funds. To my surprise and relief, the AI said I got lucky. Base and Sol networks use the same address. I just needed to add Base on Exodus and sure enough, the funds appeared. I sent the USDC Base back to Coinbase. Problem solved. Maybe this info will help some other Crypto Newbie.

Omg, I found it in coinbase wrapped. Idk what that is but I'm going to try to transfer it to a stable coin. Thank you sooooo much! This is incredible

Okay, this makes me want to pursue my case a lot more with PP. Between your explaination and what @tcpnomad has provided I've got a dialogue written up by AI to send to PP! I'm trying again.
Oh, and I can see the crypto sitting at the address so it's still there!

If you really did turn out to be a crypto scammer, I would be devastated. Because that would mean your cat isn't real and maybe is AI generated, and I would be both embarrassed to have fallen for an AI cat and heartbroken that it doesn't exist.

Basically, if it's true, please never get caught where I can find out about it. It would wreck me.

So glad you could recover your funds. Maybe mtomm will have similar success. And hopefully the paper with passphrase will show up for Teresa.

For me, losing my passphrase and a dead or lost phone would be a bigger concern than having my crypto wallet hacked. This may be a controversial position but I use a password manager for every important bit of information in my life so I only need to remember one password and never worry about losing access.

And if I croak tomorrow, the important people in my life have access to it along with a document containing instructions. Which reminds me...I must add a section dealing with crypto and peptides. The freezer alone will generate some questions. 🙂

I also use password manager, for the same reasons. My poor hubby doesn't even know how to get into the banking app. I do have my passphrase info wrote down and put away.
I am grateful for iphone backup because I have dropped my phone off the boat and into the ocean. Got another phone phone, logged in and restored....lost no info. I hope everyone can get their funds back too, I had wrote that money off, again thank you 😊

So after a long discussion with PayPal this morning they are going to keep my crypto. She keeps saying it's lost but it's not PayPal has it in their wallet.
It's only lost to me. 😔

I'd suggest using a free password safe app like KeePass. I can remember a lot of passwords, but I have more than a lot, a LOT more than a lot and sometimes I forget one, especially if it is one I use less frequently.

Sorry, that doesn't resolve your current issue, but it's a good thing to do moving forward these days when you need a password, a pin number, and a key code to go to the freaking bathroom.

Why does it not surprise me that PayPal gains from customers' misfortune?

Yep. They CAN send it back but they won't. I would close down my PP account but I'm a mystery shopper part time and it's how 90% of my companies pay me. 🫤 But you can bet I won't be leaving any money in there for them to earn interest on. I'm petty.

Well, that's not entirely accurate. It may be sitting there on that address, but no one can actually get at it. Because no one has the private key to be able to access that public address. This is unfortunately how crypto works.

I asked this earlier too, If you copied and pasted an address from your wallet, how is it that the address is not owned by you? There is something missing here. You should have the private keys. Only you can access that address.

I can't access anything because USDC it's not supported on PP. So that USDC crypto is just hanging out on a server where I can't claim it. I can see it on Etherscan. Sure, I own the PYUSD wallet I sent it to but that's not helpful.
And to pretend that PP can't access these funds seems a bit wild. Where will this money end up? It's not going to sit there for eternity. PP is going to take it eventually. It's on their crypto platform. Also, PayPal changes your crypto wallet ID for every transaction so I can't even look to see if they match.
So if there is a way to move it I'd love to know.

What is that a screenshot of?

How did you get that address in the first place? I thought you said you copied it from your wallet. What did you copy, exactly? What was the mistake you said you made?

It's not going to sit there for eternity.
That's exactly what's going to happen if no one has the private key to get to that address.

I copied my wallet address for PayPal PYUSD -ETH and put it in Exodus but I sent USDC-ETH instead of swapping it to PYUSD first. That's where I made my mistake.
You really think that PP can't see that crypto attached to that address that they generated for me? And they aren't going to scrape it out of there? That's crazy talk.
Here's the end of the conversation I had with Claude about it, which I think is a valid conclusion even if I loathe AI as much as I do crypto.
