One of my rats after many treatments suddenly exhibits the following: "Very very stingy. Took 4 attempts to inject. Stung so much. 😩" Can anyone offer any explanation? All other rats on same batch totally happy.

Sounds like one of your rats is hesitating when they are going to inject. Since they said “4 attempts to inject.”. The best thing is to just inject…. no thinking about it, no hesitation and do it like a little jab. If the stingy is coming after the injection that is an injection site reaction (ISR), but this doesn’t sound like that.

Sometimes people say that if the alcohol from the wipe isn’t fully dried that it can cause a sting. But it sounds like from what you’ve been told, it’s a user issue rather than a product issue.

ETA: Another possibility is that they are using dull needles or puncturing the stopper several times.

Get some ph test strips. What's that shit test? Big question mark if that stuff isn't pretty much ph neutral.
Homemade Hospira? 😳

Thanks for the reply. Rat is a former nurse. She says it's the liquid that stings, but nobody else is complaining.

We can't get Hospira in the UK. I did wonder about the BAC, but nobody else is complaining, just this one person.

If it stings putting the needle into the skin then it is probably the alcohol wipe alcohol , is still wet, so let it dry first.
Or it could be a large gauge needle, most people use 29-31 gauge, very fine and barely hurt. Maybe the former nurse is using larger needles?

If it stings injecting the drug/peptide, it is local tissue reaction to the chemistry of what is being injected, not an immune response ( too soon ) , so some peptides sting, most do not, and bac water can have the wrong ph which could sting, it might be injected too shallow so closer to the skin surface where there are more nerves? Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others , generally off to the side of the belly button in the subcutaneous fat is usually fine. ph test strips are pretty easy to get or even urinalysis test strips will measure ph if you want to check the bac water ph.

If it stings more later after the injection it can still be a chemical irritant response, but can also be a immune response, but there will normally be some redness and swelling if it is a localised injection site reaction caused by an immune response.

Superb answer. thank you so much!

I have found that some "providers" product stings, and some don't. Did you recently switch to a new vial? I tend to be sensitive, as other rats in the house do not complain.
