My hot take is that moderators shouldn't engage with the community at all. Their job is to sit in the background and act as a janitor. If they must participate, do it on an alt so that it doesn't overly centralize the conversation due to their celebrity status. It's very rare to see any discussions progress organically when one side has more power or influence over the other.I spent a good 12 years admining and moderatoring forums back in the vBulletin era, including some with several thousand daily users.
I think mods and admins shouldn't expect anything different in how they are challenged on false assertions, etc. If you're running (or moderating) the place for the right reason, then you let the person argue with you the same as any regular members would.
I think this is particularly important in a space like this where people's health is on the line - unsubstantiated arguments just increase the risk.
And that's where my issue with TirzHelp comes in. Their qualifier for moderator appears to be who is the most active and spams chat the most. Most of the stuff the their mods are posting is extremely low quality. And don't even get me started on the weirdo mod with the 5 ai generated photos of muscular spaniard men.
