I used Tron wallet and was completely ripped off by a hacker. As I sent the money the hacker inserted their address in place of the correct one. I have before and after photos. I sent an email to the Tron wallet CS and absolutely zero response. It’s been about 4 days. I highly recommend Trust wallet.

Bill,

You didn't do enough research and it sounds like you got scammed. Do you want to tell us a little bit more about what actually happened and who you thought you were communicating with?

A wallet app's customer service is never going to be able to help you with anything relating to your funds. Once you've clicked send, that's that.

In the future, buy your coins from Coinbase or Kraken, transfer them to a known and trusted wallet app like Exodus, and then transfer them to the vendor. Since you're not very technologically inclined, you need to be very careful about how you select a vendor.

Better luck next time.

Tron is a self-custody wallet. It's a tool that you have control over.

If they inserted a different address, it sounds like they compromised your device and swapped the address in your clipboard. This is a very common attack.

Always visually check the starting and ending characters and verify it looks right don't just trust the copy/paste.

Also your device is probably compromised. If this happened to me I would power it off immediately and destroy it.

It was not alot of money. I’m leaving the correct sender out of this discussion. They were not part of it. My son works in banking. He found the scammers address. He found the days raking. He saw that they took the money. Rolled it out fast and probably changes address fast. Basically I had the correct address. I swiped and the address was not the same after. Reading the reviews on Tron wallet it’s a cesspool of scammers. I just wanted to share this. Trust wallet was super easy. Bought and sent from there with zero issue. It m not trying to get back the money, but you would think the Tron wallet would want to see the forensics and confirm what happened to me. If they ever get back I’ll post. Are the apps you suggest cheaper or just verified safer?

I assume every piece of tech is compromised. All of us. Trust wallet was fine and flawless.

A wallet app should cost zero dollars. I don't know what Tron wallet is, but it definitely doesn't come up if I search for "safe and recommended crypto wallets".

You mentioned swiping to send funds – that implies you were on your cell phone. I seriously doubt that your cell phone was "hacked."

Whatever happened, just use a trusted program next time.

Do you have a link to the wallet?

And you would destroy your device? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense my man. Compromised device needs a factory reset at the worst, or a reinstall if it's a Windows machine. Nobody's putting a rootkit on your iPhone.

Believe me. It’s been a process. And if you go to the App Store and read the reviews on Tron wallet it’s terrible.

See attached. Is this the wallet you're referring to?

Yeah man, I wouldn't suggest using that lmao.

Glad you've got it figured out now. Careful out there.

TRON is an entire network but TronLink is the leading mobile app for it. Tronlink.org is the URL. Trust Wallet is another TRON compatible wallet at trustwallet.com. Tons of people use both for NFTs and staking other nonsense. TronLink being compromised would be front page news. Their support is probably flooded with people who somehow got hacked or scammed and I'm betting they don't respond to those tickets.

It's a big assumption to think he used one of those. He never said anything like that. It's probably a scam app called Tron wallet So that when people look up "is tron wallet legitimate" They just see official wallet apps for the cryptocurrency Tron like you're talking about.

Obviously it isn't compromised.

Yeah lol

Because I never spend more than 100 bucks on a phone. It horrifies me that people walk around carrying 4 figures of assets on their person daily. Yeah I could factory reset but I also don't have problems like this. A laptop maybe I could understand just formatting it because it is valuable.

I see that you posted a iphone app, idk what OP has but I am not familiar with the apple ecosystem and I never will be.

I decided to search for tron wallet on both the app store and the google play store. It looks like some guy managed to get his little pet app ranked #1 somehow. Why would apple allow this? Google usually removes these scam apps from their store. Maybe his device wasn't compromised, but it is now since he downloaded malware 😑

Question. If I do an iCloud back up. And reset my iPhone to factory settings, can that help with any malware. Or should I really consider a new phone or re downloading all my apps and a reset.

Bill

I am the wrong person to ask about that. I don't know how deep an iphone backup is. This is the kind of thing reddit is useful for, lots of iphone users and security experts there.

Your device is not compromised. Just uninstall the app and don't use it any more, and submit a report on the App Store too.

Nobody is going to hack your iPhone, it's just a bad app that shouldn't have been allowed on the store.

edit: Did anybody suggest that app to you? If so, they were likely part of the scam too. Just piss poor luck that you found it on your own, do your due diligence next time or ask us beforehand!

Edit: also, any information you punched into the app is compromised. If you gave them your name and birth date, they have your name and birth date, etc

I googled for apps to use. Trust wallet and Tron came up. I will write a review and complaint to Apple. Probably Tronlink was suggested. I just got scammed. It happened to me with eBay and PayPal 20 years ago. Tech prosperity has a learning curve. It’s no big deal. I’m learning things I never thought I would. GLP 1 forums has been a gift to use. Everyone here is amazing. I love being part of the group. I definitely wanted to bring attention to the scam. And fast Thank you for your reply.

For those of you who sniffed out the fake TRON app scam, can you help outline what you were looking for to detect the fakes? (anything like TUNA for phishing email scams to rely on?)

Is it as straightforward as googling for the reputable wallet apps in multiple places and trusting only the ones that you see mentioned as credible from multiple sources.

I saw this bit of news and fuggin’ yikes… be careful out there.
