Wellbutrin+naltrexone

I've had good luck with Reta, stabilizing at 8mg/week. In 4 months:

• BMI 33.5 → 29.2
• LDL 135 → 102
• A1C 5.6 → 5.0
• BP 135/95 → 125/85 (both with medication)
• TSH 4.6 → 3.7

All of which is great. But my relationship to food is still unhealthy. When I'm stressed, I still eat sugary bullshit compulsively—just less of it. I want to change that.

It seems my overeating/sugar addiction is part of an overall motivation problem. I'm prone to distraction, procrastination, and difficulty managing energy levels. I've often been called ADHD, hypomanic, etc. I think food problems are a sub-problem of that.

I don't want to try tesofensine because the aggression/moodiness and cardiac symptoms scare me. I've heard that wellbutrin+naltrexone can reduce cravings and is itself effective for weight loss. Does anyone have thoughts on this combo?

Oh I know the feeling.
I probably have some undiagnosed ADHD.
And yes I do use Contrave too, rigtig now I only use one tablet in the morning.
It works differently, it works on the MC pathway, involved in appetite and satiety.
I'm not sure it's very good on it's own for weight loss, but it is good for cravings, like you mention.
For at lot Reta is a bad appetite suppressor.
But hey great numbers !

Keep in mind that both of those medications are psych meds. Naltrexone helps with cravings in general- approved for alcohol and opioids, off label for things like gambling.

Wellbutrin is an NDRI used for depression, seasonal affective, and smoking cessation. It's used off label for ADHD.

Together, there is a medication called contrave, which is used for weight loss.

For both, go in knowing you are using psych medication, with all the little black box warnings- anxiety, suicidal ideation, etc. Make sure you are very self aware. I personally don't think I'd even consider bupropion if my psych had not prescribed it.

In order to use bupropion, I first needed to be on a mood stabilizer and anxiety medications. Without them, I did not sleep and had massive panic attacks. Naltrexone almost immediately put me into a very deep depression, so I discontinued use.

they didn't work for me. I just kept eating and eating on wellbutrin. also be aware wellbutrin can cause hair loss. there are supposed to be alot of health benefits from LDN (low dose naltrexone - lower than contrave combo) so I should use up what I have left that way.

I’ve testified in other posts about my experiences with Naltrexone and tirz and their comparative efficacy combatting my alcohol cravings (tirz better). Back in another life I also took bupropion as Chantix to quit smoking. Not fun - crazy dreams, waking delusional stream of consciousness stuff. When I saw that BP was combining those two (as Contrave), I was immediately concerned.

If you want to shut off sugar cravings, I’ve found tirz to be the best thing (in this researcher’s personal experience.)

I think you might be confusing Zyban (Wellbutrin) with Chantix (Varenicline). Chantix is the one with the wacky dreams. I've used both; Wellbutrin just made me more of an asshole than usual and my friends begged me to start smoking again, and I quit for around a year with Chantix which definitely caused some freaky dreams the first few weeks!
