Freezers?

So, I came really close to buying a version of this freezer on AliExpress but the best price I could find was about $300 including shipping: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256806034456571.html?gatewayAdapt=glo2usa4itemAdapt

It's the one with the 17L freezer on the bottom.

I realized at that point that $300 would get me a really good normal freezer and went back to the drawing board. I'm now looking at portable car freezers on Amazon like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0B1Q2J2X1/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=AFNMPH8W65Q6L&psc=1

It's also half as expensive as the mini fridge, but more importantly it's portable and has a battery. Not sure if this is what I actually want though. I've been looking for a chest freezer to stock up on some things and this is about the same cost. Main benefits of a car freezer are portability and built in battery, but is that enough?

It’s been a few weeks but I have been happy with the -40 chest freezer that was mentioned a while ago. It does keep -40 without much fuss and isn’t that big thankfully.

Edit: Not sure about their longevity but those car freezers are pretty nifty if you travel a bunch. We use them when we go to Miami to load up on fresh avocados and they keep everything fresh and cool even in the Florida sun. Only thing I can say about them is they are ass once unplugged compared to a regular cooler.

Might be prying but do you have any other chest freezers in your home? Not sure if you like hoarding food like peptides but they are quite nice to have around :)

I don't have a chest freezer, but I have been thinking about getting one to stock up on a few things and get my peptides out of the regular freezer. The only thing holding me back is that I actually like the car freezer. tl;dr is that I've been thinking about traveling more (internationally) and I think it would be much easier to do that if I took my peps with me. Can't do this with a normal chest freezer. Also has the added benefit of keeping everything cool during transport.
 
After reviewing a lot of options, I ended up going with this portable car freezers on Amazon:


A few reasons why:

- While this one has no reviews, it's a new model being offered by an established brand in the portable freezer space
- It will maintain a temp of -20°c
- It's significantly smaller than most portable freezers which gives me more storage options. It will also be easier to travel with if I need to transport my entire pep stash
- it has a nice and easy to read digital display
- seems like the best balance of cost and features if you don't want to buy an actual cryo freezer.

I'll do some temp tests once it arrives and let you know how they go.

Here is the one that I ordered. There are a few companies that resell these but they are all the same so long as they have the "upgraded compressor" picture and the digital control panel.

Depends on your local cost per kwh but I can say that the freezer uses ~160w when running and it seems to be running most of the time when I am near it. If I estimate that it runs 20 hours a day (a over estimation hopefully) it would use 3.2 kwh per day and that would cost someone paying 15 cents per kwh .48 cents a day. At some point, I will time it and leave the meter plugged in for 24 hours to get a proper estimation of its actual power usage per day because I do have hope that it doesn't cost half a dollar a day to run 💸
 
Thanks for that! I might grab it. I was hoping to find a smaller one, because ai have to keep it upstairs in my home office/guest bedroom/3d printing station…..but Ibreally do want the -40 one.
 
A quick update for those that are interested. After 25 hours, the freezer has used 2.03 kWh and the average run wattage is 105 watts. I tried to remember to measure it right at 24 hours but got busy with work. Freezer is in a closet and it is usually 72 degrees in there at all times so it shouldn’t have to work all that hard.

Some thoughts on my car freezer now that I've had it for about a week:

It's relatively small, but big enough to hold my entire peptide stash of 27+ kits with plenty of room to spare.

Controls are easy to use and it comes with two cords: one for car charging, one for a standard outlet.

While it cools extremely quickly for an item intended to be portable, it doesn't quite hit -20C/-4F. Current temp is holding steady at -17.4C/0.68F. That's good (better than the temp in my freezer door), but not what I was hoping for.

I actually like it a lot in spite of that, but I'm not sure if I'll keep it.

I am surprised it gets down to -17C with it only drawing 60W. If I had a need to transport my stockpile, like moving to another state, I would buy one. I guess it could come in handy if there was a power failure but my higher cost peps are in food storage thermoses that will keep them frozen at least 12 hours and by then I would have my generator setup and running.

Sorry this one didn't work out for you. My $200 Amazon special has been holding the temp pretty well even with me opening it once a week or so.

I'm not quite sure what I'll do now. Thinking about buying a proper second freezer (3-7cu) to store some extra food anyway. I suspect the price of everything, including our peps, will go up.
